Update on the Walnut Tree Walk Healthy Neighbourhood
We are excited to announce that we have developed a new design proposal for the Walnut Tree Walk Healthy Neighbourhood.
Learn more about why the proposed design has changed and the next steps below!
Phases
New traffic filter on Walnut Tree Walk
The first engagement phase for the Walnut Tree Walk Healthy Neighbourhood took place between October and January 2025, the second one between May and August 2025.
During these two periods, we have received valuable feedback from residents and stakeholders which has helped shape our understanding of the proposed design and how these may work for local people.
Based on the feedback received, we have developed a new design that responds to local access concerns. This new design relocates the Walnut Tree Walk traffic filter.
Why has the proposed design been changed?
Following conversations with key stakeholders and a petition circulated by residents we reviewed the proposed design. The feedback received was that directly impacted residents and local organisations preferred accessing their street from Kennington Road rather than Lambeth Walk which is the rationale for relocating the filter to the new location.
What is the new proposed traffic filter location?
The new traffic filter location being proposed is between the junction with Lambeth Walk and west of the crossover of Bedlam Mews on Walnut Tree Walk.

In consultation with Walnut Tree Walk Primary School, the School Street on Walnut Tree Walk would be removed as the principal entrance to the school is on Fitzalan Street.
People walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting would be able to pass through, as well as motorised vehicles with an exemption. This includes emergency vehicles, refuse and Blue Badge holders.

All feedback received during this next engagement phase will be analysed by the project team. It will be used to create an updated Design Report. The Design Report explains what we've learnt and how that's helped shape the Walnut Tree Walk Healthy Neighbourhood design. You can find the previous Design Report below.
If a decision is made to introduce the trial, a Decision Report will be published and will include the final design for the proposed Walnut Tree Walk Healthy Neighbourhood trial. This will be published online.
As part of the decision-making process, we will consult on the proposed design for the Walnut Tree Walk Healthy Neighbourhood trial with statutory consultees such as the Police, Ambulance, London Fire Service. We will respond to any feedback received.
If authorised, the Walnut Tree Walk Healthy Neighbourhood will be launched. An Experimental Traffic Order will be made to cover the traffic changes in the proposed Healthy Neighbourhood area. Anyone will be able to lodge a formal representation or objection to the trial Healthy Neighbourhood within six months of the day that the experimental order comes into force. During the experimental trial period, officers will monitor the trial, consider feedback and potentially amend the scheme in response.
