Brockwell Park to Gipsy Hill Healthy Route
The Brockwell Park to Gipsy Hill (also known as Rosendale Road) Healthy Route is key part of the Healthy Routes network. It connects several:
- neighbourhoods
- schools
- businesses
- workplaces
- green spaces
- amenities
- public transport hubs.
Lambeth is committed to creating streets and neighbourhoods that are healthy, safe, inclusive and pleasant. We want to enable the community to travel more actively, as this benefits public health and wellbeing, and is part of Lambeth's Climate Action Plan to become net zero compatible and climate resilient by 2030.
The Healthy Route network is part of Lambeth’s Transport Strategy The routes are convenient, safe and accessible to all. They can be on quiet streets where traffic levels are low or on main roads where dedicated space is provided for walking, wheeling and cycling.
The project has 4 phases:
- phase 1 - between Brockwell Park and Turney Road (built in 2021)
- phase 2 - between Turney Road and A205 South Circular (built in 2023)
- phase 3 - between A205 and Park Hall Road (in development)
- phase 4 - between Park Hall Road and Gipsy Hill station (In development)

Phases
Phase 1: Norwood Road to Turney Road
Phase 1 - Norwood Road to Turney Road
Phase 1 of the Healthy Route was installed in January 2021, initially as a temporary scheme, which consisted of:
- Four new zebra crossings
- A new two-way cycle track protected with traffic wands
- A banned left turn for general traffic from Rosendale Road into Turney Road
Phase 1 became permanent in 2022 and a range of measures were developed to increase durability and safety of the existing route. Proposals consisted of:
- Raising the existing zebra crossings (north of the junctions of Guernsey Grove and Hawarden Grove) to reduce vehicle speeds
- New coloured surfacing on the cycle track across the junctions of Guernsey Grove and Hawarden Grove, to visually reinforce cycle priority
- New protective islands at the junctions of Guernsey Grove and Hawarden Grove to slow vehicles entering and exiting the minor roads, by reducing the turning radii.
- Raised continuous footways across the junctions of Guernsey Grove and Hawarden Grove to make it easier for pedestrians to cross and to make pedestrian priority explicit
- New cycle parking outside the shops
- Replacing traffic wands (used to create physical separation between the cycleway and the carriageway) with more robust ‘splitter’ islands
- Resurfacing and remarking the parallel zebra crossing connecting Rosendale Road and Brockwell park
- Replacing damaged or missing ‘traffic wands’ along the cycle track on Norwood Road
- Replacing old road markings on Norwood Road (between Croxted Road and Brockwell Park Gardens) to make the road layout clearer, including removing the centre line to encourage vehicles to move slowly.
Engagement Informal consultation on Phase 1a proposals was conducted in March - April 2023. The engagement included:
- A letter drop – sent to 375 addresses; the distribution area included all addresses located within 100m of the proposed changes.
- A Commonplace webpage; there were 1,841 visitors and 91 people responded to the online survey.
- A survey accessible in either digital or paper format upon request.
There was overall support for the proposals and in 2024, they were installed.
