What is a Cycle Hangar?

A cycle hangar is a cylindrical-like container with metal bike racks inside to allow bikes can be locked to. It has a gas sprung locking door to ensure quiet operation. Each hangar has the capacity to hold six bikes and take up less on-street space than a single car. Annual membership has recently been reduced from £42 p.a. to £30 p.a.per space and available to apply for via the LockIt Safe website: https://bikenest.co.uk/

Cycling is an important travel option for residents and contributes positively to making the borough cleaner and greener. The Climate Action Plan (CAP) agreed to allocate 25% of the kerbside, of which 94% is currently used to provide and manage car parking, to support resilience to climate change.

Demand for bike storage is already extremely high in Lambeth, and with almost all existing Cycle Hangars being full and having long waiting lists.

To support everyday cycling, it is important the council offers a solution for residents who wish to cycle and may be unable to store their bicycles at home n.b. currently 65% of Lambeth’s population live in flats or apartments with limited storage space.

In May 2022 the council committed to provide an additional 5,000 spaces within the next 4 years. The council’s Kerbside Strategy, adopted in January 2023, builds on this ambition by setting out the minimum commitment for secure cycle parking provision every 100 metres on every street in Lambeth.
