Heat Risk Project- Cool Packs Survey 1 (Sign up)
Climate change means a higher probability of extreme heat episodes in UK cities with higher peak temperatures and longer duration as we last saw in the 2022 heatwave which resulted in 387 excess deaths in London [London Assembly – Cost of Net Zero]
Lambeth is particularly susceptible due to its high population density, high levels of deprivation including poor health, housing unsuited to extreme heat and the urban heat island effect [Impact on urban health]
This project is about understanding how we can make use of local social infrastructure to identify residents most at risk from summer heat, deliver key information and deliver effectively targeted interventions during hot weather and heat emergencies (heat waves).
This project is sponsored by Impact on Urban Health and Lambeth Council.
The project will focus on Angell Town, Loughborough and Mooreland estates but lessons learned have the potential to be applied across Lambeth, London and similar areas across the UK.
London Councils and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have been consulted in designing the project and have shown support for it and interest in its findings.
Our local delivery lead is Big Local North Brixton who we have signed a grant agreement with and we anticipate providing small grants to several local VCS groups including Thriving Fiveways, Marcus Lipton and a number of other groups locally.
