Project Eden is a community-led wellbeing and learning initiative based in Brixton, designed to support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in improving their academic writing, emotional regulation, and behavioural management through a unique combination of academic mentoring and martial arts (Kickboxing).
Many young people in Brixton face barriers that impact both their educational attainment and mental wellbeing. SEN students, in particular, often struggle with focus, frustration, and confidence, which can lead to disengagement from learning and behavioural challenges. Project Eden addresses these issues by integrating literacy support with physical and emotional training, helping young people to channel their energy positively and build the discipline and confidence needed for success—both in and out of school.
What the project will deliver with a budget of £5,000:
• Weekly Academic Writing Workshops: Focused on building key literacy skills—sentence structure, paragraph organisation, essay writing, and creative expression—adapted to each learner’s needs. These sessions promote focus, patience, and pride in written work.
• Weekly Kickboxing and Emotional Regulation Sessions: Delivered by a qualified martial arts instructor, sessions will teach self-discipline, focus, and respect, while offering a healthy outlet for managing anger, anxiety, and frustration. Students will learn breathing, mindfulness, and body awareness techniques to regulate emotions.
• Reflective Journaling and Mentorship: Students will write short reflections after each session to connect physical discipline with emotional awareness and academic progress. Mentors will monitor wellbeing and celebrate personal growth milestones.
• Community Showcases: Termly sessions where participants can demonstrate their learning—academically and physically—to families and the local community, building confidence and community pride.
Who it will support:
The project will support SEN students aged 11–19 in Brixton, including those with ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and learning difficulties. It will particularly benefit young people from low-income and Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, who often face systemic educational and health inequalities. The programme will run in collaboration with local schools and youth centres to ensure accessibility for those most in need.
What difference it will make:
• Improved academic outcomes: Students will develop stronger writing skills, focus, and academic confidence through supportive, adaptive teaching.
• Better emotional regulation: Martial arts and mindfulness will teach self-control, patience, and resilience.
• Reduced behavioural incidents: Students will have positive strategies for managing frustration and conflict, improving behaviour in school and at home.
• Enhanced community wellbeing: The project will strengthen relationships between young people, educators, families, and local organisations—creating a culture of empowerment and inclusion in Brixton.
How the funding will help:
Funding will cover instructor fees (academic and martial arts), equipment (kickboxing pads, gloves, journals), venue hire, accessibility tools for SEN students, and resources for progress tracking and evaluation. This investment will make the programme free for participants and sustainable for at least one full academic term.
Why it will succeed:
Brixton has a strong tradition of community resilience and youth empowerment. By combining academic learning with martial arts, Project Eden offers a fresh, culturally relevant approach that resonates with local young people. It harnesses the power of discipline, creativity, and self-expression—equipping SEN students to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially, while contributing positively to the wider Brixton community.
