Spotlight - Creativity, Connection and Confidence for Young People in South London

What will your project deliver?

Spotlight began as our partner charity Grounded Sounds’ flagship programme, created to champion the next generation of South London music talent. Grounded Sounds is now sadly winding up operations — but at Raw Material, having proudly partnered with them for years, we’re determined to carry that legacy forward and keep this vital opportunity alive for local young people.

Spotlight is more than a music programme — it’s a space for creativity, connection and wellbeing. Over six weeks in the summer, 10–12 emerging artists aged 18–30 will take part in an inspiring mix of masterclasses, industry sessions, rehearsals and live performances at Raw Material’s creative hub in Brixton.

Through creating and performing together, young people build confidence, purpose and emotional resilience. Working alongside professional artists and mentors helps them express their feelings, manage stress, and develop positive mental health habits — all while learning what it really takes to build a career in music.

The journey culminates in the Spotlight Showcase, a live gig where participants perform their original work to family, friends and the wider community — a joyful celebration of creativity, courage and South London pride.

Who will it support?

Spotlight is for young adults from Brixton and across South London who are full of creative energy but face barriers to the music industry — whether through financial hardship, racial or social inequality, or lack of opportunity.

Many come from global majority and working-class backgrounds, communities often excluded from creative spaces and least likely to access traditional mental health support. For these young people, creativity isn’t just self-expression — it’s healing.

At Raw Material, we’ve seen first-hand how creative practice can improve wellbeing. Across our programmes last year:

• Anxiety reduced for 75% of participants.
• Depression and low mood improved for 70%.
• Feelings of isolation dropped for 80%.
• Self-esteem increased for 85%.
• And those rating their overall mental health as “good–excellent” rose from 25% to 60% — a 35-point improvement.

Spotlight builds directly on this track record of creative health impact.

What difference will it make?

Spotlight turns creative potential into wellbeing and opportunity. Participants will:

• Develop songwriting, performance and production skills.
• Strengthen teamwork, communication and confidence.
• Learn positive ways to manage anxiety and build resilience.
• Connect with peers and mentors, reducing isolation.
• Perform live, celebrating achievement and self-worth.

The benefits ripple through the community — families come together to celebrate, friends feel inspired, and South London gains role models grounded in creativity and care.

How will this funding help your community?

The £45,000 will secure Spotlight’s future in Brixton and ensure its wellbeing impact continues to grow. It will:

• Pay local professional artists and mentors to lead workshops and performances.
• Cover rehearsal, production and showcase costs.
• Provide travel and food bursaries so no one is excluded by cost.

Without this support, South London will lose a really impactful creative health programme for young people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this opportunity. Your vote will help keep Spotlight shining — giving young people a safe, creative space to feel good, express themselves and grow.
