Running Away From Problems #RAFP
Thank you for the opportunity to pitch for this funding. We are requesting £10,000 in funding to support a new health and wellbeing initiative by Running Away From Problems (#RAFP) a vibrant, fast-growing community run club based out of Brixton.
The RAFP journey began as one man on a mission (me) to use running as way to build mental clarity during a very difficult time. After a string of viral content it became bigger than just me and turned into a safe space for people to run, connect, and look after their mental and physical health. Since launching, we’ve grown to over 250 community members, predominantly from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds, creating a movement that inspires people to take the first step towards better health. Now, we want to expand our impact.
Our proposal is to introduce monthly wellbeing sessions focused on making movement more inclusive, fun, and accessible to vulnerable groups in the community.
What we aim to offer:
- A series of 12 monthly activities (1 per month), including Boxing, Pilates, Padel, Yoga, Skiing, and other low-barrier fitness experiences. In conjunction with our bi-weekly community runs. "Boxing Away From Problems", "Padelling Away From Problems"... The possibilities are endless.
- Free or heavily subsidised participation for vulnerable groups, including those from low-income backgrounds, young Black men and women, and those struggling with their mental health.
- Community leaders delivering sessions designed to build confidence and holistic wellbeing.
For who?
- As a Brixton resident majority of my network resides within both Peckham and Brixton. We aim to help engage people particularly from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds.
- Vulnerable groups, including individuals at risk of social isolation, low-income households, and those managing their mental health.
- Young adults who may not have access to structured wellbeing activities. We're open to all walks of society who just want to find an escape from problems through fitness.
The difference it will make:
- Physical wellbeing: Encouraging regular movement and introducing new forms of exercise to people who may not have access otherwise.
- Mental wellbeing: Creating a consistent, positive community space that helps reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness.
- Social connection: Building bridges between communities through shared activity.
- Confidence & empowerment: Supporting individuals to take control of their health journey in an inclusive, non-judgmental environment.
How funding will help:
- Covering costs for facility hire and equipment.
- Paying qualified instructors and facilitators.
- Providing free or low-cost access for participants.
- Supporting logistics, marketing, and community outreach to ensure broad accessibility.
Why we believe this project will succeed:
- RAFP has already demonstrated strong community engagement through our weekly runs, growing organically to 250+ members in under a year. With weekly turnouts of 20+ people.
- Our sessions have a proven impact on people’s mental and physical health, fostering a unique culture of openness, positivity, and shared purpose.
- There’s a clear demand for accessible wellbeing activities in Brixton as many residents face health and social inequalities.
- By meeting people where they are and offering varied, enjoyable activities, we can make movement a lifestyle rather than a one-off event.
