Building HER… CIC is a Brixton-based not-for-profit organisation led by women with lived experience of mental health conditions. We are dedicated to supporting women and girls who face isolation, low confidence and financial barriers. Our vision is clear: to see women and girls living happier, healthier lives free from the mental and emotional pressures holding them back.
At the heart of Building HER… is a belief that small consistent steps Likkle by Likkle lead to big change. We primarily support women and girls from global majority backgrounds, particularly Black women and girls who are too often overlooked by mainstream wellbeing services. Research shows they are around twice as likely to be missed by NHS mental health services compared with other women often only receiving help once they reach crisis point. Many of those we support are navigating challenges such as financial hardship, parenthood and ongoing mental health issues. We provide nurturing spaces where they can rebuild confidence, connect with others and rediscover joy.
Over the past six years Building HER… has become a trusted space for more than 1,500 women and girls in Brixton to connect, reflect and grow. Our four main initiatives form a holistic system for wellbeing, personal growth and community connection.
Pour In To You serves over 100 women through quarterly meet ups, monthly workshops and one off events that empower women mentally, emotionally and physically. Sessions cover stress management, self care, body confidence and emotional resilience delivered through creative and culturally relevant activities that help women take ownership of their wellbeing.
Building HER Story (BHS) is for girls aged 9-18. These programmes help build self esteem and confidence through creative workshops and empowerment projects. One of these is a podcast project delivered in partnership with BlackMaven CIC, training 15 girls annually to become mental health and wellbeing champions. It provides a platform for them to explore identity, friendships and mental health while learning storytelling, teamwork and creative skills. This project builds bridges between generations and encourages honest open conversations about growing up and thriving in today’s world.
Cooking & Conversations, brings together women aged 55+ to cook, eat and share stories while teaching younger women traditional recipes. These intergenerational sessions reduce loneliness, build community and create meaningful peer-to-peer support. Women leave with full hearts, full bellies and a stronger sense of belonging.
To continue this work core funding is vital. Support with staffing, space hire, materials and outreach enables us to coordinate activities, maintain safe spaces and ensure consistent support for the women who rely on us.
In Brixton beneath the community’s strength and culture many women silently struggle with isolation and anxiety. Building HER… offers something different: a sisterhood rooted in lived experience and community care. Our programmes don’t just teach skills, they help women feel seen, heard and valued.
With this funding we can sustain our core team, deliver our key projects and continue reaching women and girls who need to pour back into themselves. When women feel whole our entire community flourishes.
