Our project aims to equip young people with the essential leadership, emotional intelligence, and decision-making skills needed to become positive influencers within their communities. Through a structured 11-week “Community Leadership and Gang Intervention” programme, followed by an educational trip and graduation ceremony, participants will learn to identify local issues, exchange ideas, and work collaboratively with peers and community leaders to create solutions. The budget includes core costs to work towards securing funding for additional programmes for the following year. We are requesting £35,610.
The programme includes interactive workshops, peer discussions, mentoring sessions, and personal development exercises. Focus is on helping young people understand themselves and others, enhance their communication, emotional awareness, and develop practical leadership skills. Participants will also gain a deeper understanding of community responsibility, teamwork, and social impact.
The Gang Intervention module will challenge participants to reflect on their life choices, explore the consequences of gang involvement, and develop strategies for positive decision-making. By presenting real-life scenarios and involving professionals such as youth workers, reformed ex-offenders, and community mentors, young people will be empowered to make informed, life-changing choices.
This project is designed primarily for young people aged 13–21 who live in the Stockwell/Brixton area and are at risk of social exclusion, gang affiliation, or antisocial behaviour. It will support those who may lack positive role models or opportunities for leadership development. The wider community, including parents will benefit from the reduction in antisocial behaviour and the growth of positive community engagement among young people.
Our project will:
- Improve participants’ self-awareness, communication, and emotional resilience.
- Strengthen social ties and foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
- Reduce the appeal of gang culture by promoting positive identity and personal responsibility.
- Encourage civic participation, volunteerism, and leadership among young people.
- Support improved wellbeing, confidence, and decision-making that contribute to healthier, safer communities.
By nurturing self-reflection and empathy, the project promotes mental and emotional wellbeing. The skills developed will have lifelong benefits, supporting educational attainment, employment readiness, and a positive sense of community identity.
The requested funding will be used to deliver the 11-week programme, covering facilitator fees, learning materials, travel and refreshments, and the cost of the educational trip and graduation. Funding will also support outreach to ensure that young people most at risk are included. Plus core costs to work towards securing future funding.
Our approach builds on proven community engagement and youth development models, focusing on empowerment rather than punishment. By combining leadership training, emotional education, and real-world reflection, we provide practical tools for lasting change. Our team includes experienced youth mentors and community leaders with a track record of successful youth engagement and gang prevention work.
We believe that young people are not the problem — they are the solution. With the right guidance and opportunities, they can become the driving force behind safer, stronger, and more resilient communities. This project will lay the foundation for a generation of informed, compassionate, and capable community leaders, shaping a healthier and more hopeful future for all.
