Brixton Sound Lab

From "THINC Fund: Powering Ideas for a Healthier Brixton"

Go to the project

Brixton Sound Lab is a weekly music project for young people aged 16 to 25 in Brixton and the surrounding areas, with a focus on those who are from Black/Asian/Ethnic backgrounds, low-income, LGBTQ+, or living with disabilities, we are requesting £10,000 in funding. The project is all about giving young people a space to express themselves through music, build skills, and improve their mental wellbeing in a supportive and creative environment. Each week, participants will take part in hands-on sessions in music production, DJing, and guitar. These sessions are designed to be accessible for everyone, whether they are complete beginners or already have some experience. Sessions will run both in-person and online to make sure everyone can take part, no matter their circumstances.

Each month across the 3 months will focus on a different priority group, giving participants dedicated time and attention to explore music in ways that feel meaningful to them. At the end of each month, there may be a small showcase or sharing session where participants can share what they’ve created with friends, family, and the community. These moments are designed to build confidence, create a sense of achievement, and celebrate the participants’ creativity.

The project will deliver practical skills in music production, DJing, and guitar, but it’s more than that. It will give participants tools to manage stress, build confidence, and find a creative outlet for their emotions. The sessions will encourage collaboration, friendship, and peer support, helping to strengthen connections between young people in the area.

This project is intended to support young people from priority communities, including those who are low-income, LGBTQ+, living with disabilities, and young people. It will also naturally include participants from Black, Asian, and other ethnic minority backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of Brixton.

The difference it will make is real. Participants will leave with new skills, a stronger sense of self, improved mental wellbeing, and a network of peers who share their passion for music. By giving young people a safe space to create and express themselves, the project will reduce feelings of isolation, provide positive role models, and inspire confidence in their abilities.

Funding will cover venue hire, staff, equipment here like guitars, DJ decks, and production software, facilitator fees, and online platform costs. This ensures the project is free, inclusive, and high-quality, so money is never a barrier for anyone who wants to take part. The funding will allow us to reach more people, provide the best possible experience, and make sure the project is sustainable over the three months.

This project will succeed because it is designed by someone who understands music, creativity, and youth culture, and who has experience performing, DJing, and running workshops. It meets a real need in the community, gives young people the tools to improve their wellbeing, and celebrates their voices through music. Brixton Sound Lab is more than a project - it’s a space for young people to express, create, and be seen.
