Brixton Healthy Streets is a programme designed to deliver a series of monthly community-centred, car-free day events taking place from June 2026 to September 2026, for a total of 4 Saturdays, on the second Saturday of each month. It will be building on our already successfully delivered Reimagining Atlantic Road initiative, where a section of Atlantic Road in Brixton is closed to motor traffic and opened to people, transforming the street into a vibrant, inclusive public space focused on health, wellbeing, and community connection.
Each monthly event will host a wide range of activities and services designed to support the theme of health, including physical mental and financial health. We will run the popular Black Farmer’s Market, bringing locally grown, organic produce directly to the community. Alongside this, we’ll feature vegan and healthy hot food vendors, encouraging healthier eating choices.
There will be free creative workshops hosted by local arts organisations, engaging residents in therapeutic and social activities. Local mental health charities including Mosaic Clubhouse and Certitude London will host information stalls, providing on-the-spot support, signposting, and resources. We will also invite other local organisations to offer free health checks and expert advice on managing health conditions, preventative care, and access to local services.
We will host physical activity demos by local fitness businesses, including opportunities to win free classes and competitions designed to encourage active lifestyles. Active travel partners such as Lime will provide helmet giveaways, and discount codes to promote low-carbon, healthy transport. Free bike repair stations will be available to all residents and visitors during the events to support cycling in our community.
Brixton Healthy Streets is designed for all residents of Brixton, with a specific focus on priority communities including Black and Minority Ethnic groups, people experiencing mental health challenges, and those facing economic inequalities. Brixton is a richly diverse area, but also one with significant health disparities and limited access to green or safe public space. Our project targets low-income families, older adults, and young people who often face barriers to accessing cultural activities, healthy food choices, fitness opportunities, bespoke financial advice and mental health support.
This project will directly improve health and wellbeing in the area by reclaiming the streets for people, reducing pollution, creating a safer environment that fosters social connections. The regular presence of mental health organisations and free creative workshops provides low-barrier, stigma-free access to support, which is especially vital for communities who may be underrepresented in traditional healthcare settings.
This funding opportunity will support the logistics (road closures management, permits as well as additional security and event infrastructure), commissions for local facilitators, and healthy giveaways. It will also help cover promotion to ensure all communities know about and feel welcome at the events. We are applying for £49,753 for the Brixton Healthy Streets 2026 programme. This funding is crucial to ensure that all offerings remain free and accessible to everyone.
We have experience in the delivery of such programme, we have previously delivered similar event on Atlantic Road in 2023 for London Festival of Architecture, co-funded by LB Lambeth, Brixton Station Road (Summer 2025) funded by the GLA Summer Streets Fund, Atlantic Road (Summer 2025) co-funded by LB Lambeth & GLA Summer Streets Fund.
This is a collaborative project with deep community roots. We are a not-for-profit organisation fully funded by over 560 locally based businesses, we work with charities and residents. As we have been operating in the area since 2014, we have a strong understanding on how to ensure the project reflects the community’s needs and aspirations. Brixton Healthy Streets not only promotes health but reclaims public space in a way that fosters equity, pride, and togetherness.
